Crazy Burgers at the Thompson Diner

Prior to visiting Toronto, I had my heart set on visiting a place called Uncle Betty's because they served one of their burgers on a doughnut. Well, it turns out we didn't have to head there afterall.
In the same tony hotel that houses Scarpetta, there is the Thompson Diner. It's open 24 hours, and I had heard something about an insane burger (or two) there too.
Caesar
We decided to make this a slightly boozy brunch, so I tried their Sunny Caesar, with Bacon Infused Vodka, Clamato Juice, Worcestershire & Tabasco, all topped with a Hard Boiled Quail Egg & Crispy Bacon. I was informed that they didn't have quail eggs, but he offered to give me a real egg instead. As you can see, the skewer couldn't possible hold a whole egg, but the half that he gave me was good enough. Can't really taste the bacon in the vodka, but at least you can taste the vodka! Brunch Burger So yes, even though the cocktail was quite pretty, it certainly was not the reason for this visit. Remember something about a doughnut burger? Burger Closeup Well, to be more exact, it's the Brunch Burger, a Beef Burger with Fried Egg, Melted Cheddar & Bacon...on a Powdered Doughnut. This closeup shot shows you every ingredient, perfectly executed. The doughnut is of the unglazed variety, so it's not too sweet for a savoury dish. It is fairly flat though, so the burger and other fillings do overwhelm it a bit.
Oops, did I forget to mention the onion rings? These had a good coating, didn't fall apart and were crispy as they should be. If it had to find fault, I would just say that they were a touch bland.
Wait! I'm not done yet! I wasn't lying when I said they had more than one crazy burger...they also have a Grilled Cheese Burger. Now be careful as you scroll down, you might just feel your arteries hardening.IMG-20120826-02479 They call this their Grilled Cheese Burger, but this ain't no plain old Cheeseburger...in fact, this burger is Two Grilled Cheese Sandwiches as the bun for a Sirloin Burger Patty, crispy Bacon, Chipotle Sauce, Lettuce & Tomato. Yes, because at the point really, the veggies make it okay.
IMG-20120826-02483 A view from behind...see the bacon jutting out and the ooey cheese from the Grilled Cheese? That's four layers of bread, people!
IMG-20120826-02481 Yes, this is food for two people. We didn't finish everything, but I must say we came pretty close. The doughnut bottom was sacrificed, as well as some of the grilled cheese, and I'm not sure but I don't think the tomato made it anywhere near our mouths.
Did I mention this place is open 24 hours? So whenever you wake up the "day after", you can head on down to the Thompson Diner for these hangover cures.

Take Note:
  • They do have healthy options too, we purposely came for these extreme eats
  • Many people rave about the Double Macaroni & Cheese, and the Buttermilk Fried Chicken too
  • Breakfast Poutine available: topped with chopped sausage, poached egg, hollandaise & gravy
